Experimentos han demostrado que la p\u00e9rdida de estas neuronas provoca insomnio: el sue\u00f1o de las ratas se reduce a la mitad en comparaci\u00f3n con el sue\u00f1o normal, y el sue\u00f1o que se produce es interrumpido e intranquilo.<br \/>\nExiste una regi\u00f3n en el cerebro humano que corresponde al n\u00facleo pre\u00f3ptico venomedial de la rata, que inhibe las neuronas del n\u00facleo intermedio del hipot\u00e1lamo. Esta regi\u00f3n se encuentra en el cerebro y se activa por el mismo tipo de neurotransmisor inhibidor, la galanina.
