Rex had been by Anna’s side for more than ten years — a loyal friend and companion. At first, she thought he was just nervous, but soon realized it was something else.
Anna stopped. Rex pressed close to her feet. He didn’t growl or whine — he just looked into her eyes with an intense gaze.
“Rex, come on, my good boy,” she whispered, hoping he would get up. But the dog didn’t move. The guests’ whispers grew louder. Anna’s father was already reaching for the leash.
And then — a faint, barely audible growl. It was strange. Rex had never behaved like this before.
Anna knelt down beside him, cupped his muzzle in her hands, and looked into his eyes:
“What’s wrong, my dear?”
That’s when she noticed his heavy breathing and trembling paws. Her heart clenched. At that moment, she saw no one but Rex.
The guests whispered among themselves, confused about what was happening, but Anna only heard the beating of her own heart and saw only Rex’s eyes — full of tenderness and sadness.

Anna stopped. The guests exchanged confused glances. The groom also stepped closer. Then she said firmly:
“We’re going to the vet. Immediately.”
The wedding was canceled on the spot. The white dress, the music, the flowers — all of it was left behind as they, together with their parents, loaded Rex into the car and rushed to the clinic.
The doctors diagnosed Rex with heart failure, and he had only a few days, maybe weeks left. Anna couldn’t hold back tears.
“I can’t celebrate the wedding knowing my Rex is leaving. He’s part of my family,” she told the groom. “Please, let’s postpone everything. I have to be with him.”
The groom hugged her and agreed without hesitation:
“Of course. He’s more important. We’ll have the wedding later. The main thing is to be with those you love.”
A few hours later, Anna’s parents, the groom’s parents, and the priest entered the veterinary clinic. They brought rings and flowers.
“We thought,” said Anna’s father, “if the wedding should be in the presence of the closest people, why not hold it here? Let Rex be with you at this moment.”
So, right there in the clinic, the most sincere and touching ceremony took place. Anna wore a simple white blouse, the groom a shirt with rolled-up sleeves, and between them lay Rex, peacefully dozing, surrounded by the love that filled everything around.
