Jamal Roberts, a proud Meridian native, made a powerful impression during “Hollywood Week” on American Idol, earning his spot in the next round after over half of the 144 hopefuls were eliminated on Monday night, March 31.

The 26-year-old physical education teacher from Crestwood Elementary first earned his golden ticket in the previous week’s auditions, officially joining the lineup for American Idol’s 23rd season.

During Monday’s episode, Roberts stepped into the spotlight on the “Idol Arena” stage and delivered a soulful and emotional performance of Anthony Hamilton’s “Her Heart,” captivating judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and guest mentor Carrie Underwood.

Before hitting the stage, a video segment introduced viewers to Roberts’ background. In the clip, he’s seen casting a fishing line in his hometown, speaking openly about the challenges facing his community.

“This is my home — where I was born and raised,” he shared in a voiceover. “It’s not always easy here. There’s crime, fear, and people who feel like they can’t speak up without putting themselves in danger. Sometimes, you don’t even want to step outside.”

Still, Roberts remains hopeful for a brighter future in his city.

“There’s so much untapped potential here,” he added. “I’m just trying to be a little light in the darkness.”

He also spoke about the impact he hopes to have as a role model for the students he teaches.

“I want my kids to look at me and know they can be themselves — that they can follow their dreams,” Roberts said. “Being on American Idol feels surreal. There was a time I didn’t think I was good enough. But now I want to show people that if you keep pushing, keep doing the right thing, and stay true to yourself, good things will come. Everyone has a gift — you just have to believe in it.”
